The City of Eustis has taken a significant step in advancing public safety by integrating real-time weather tracking features into its park webpages. This latest enhancement, led by the Eustis Parks and Recreation Department, allows residents to check current weather conditions at key park locations from any device with internet access.
The integration follows the March 2025 installation of advanced lightning detection systems at four public parks: Carla Gann-Thompson “GT” Dog Park, Carver Park, the Eustis Aquatics Center, and Sunset Island Park. These systems detect lightning within a 10-mile radius and activate onsite sirens to alert park visitors when it is unsafe to remain outdoors.
To expand the reach of this safety measure, the City of Eustis has now embedded live weather tracking displays directly into each park’s page on the City of Eustis website. When no lightning is detected, a green checkmark appears on the display. If lightning is present, a red clock icon appears, indicating a countdown until it is safe to return.
“This addition is the next step in our commitment to outdoor safety,” said Sam Brinson, Director of Eustis Parks and Recreation. “The new website integration makes real-time weather information more accessible, ensuring our parks remain enjoyable and safe for our community.”
In addition to the website feature, signage with QR codes has been installed at each of the four parks. Visitors can scan the code to view the same weather display available online, giving them up-to-the-minute information while on-site.
The new tool is especially important for facilities like the Eustis Aquatics Center, where operations are directly affected by weather conditions. The pool, for example, must close for at least 30 minutes following a nearby lightning strike, a safety policy that patrons can now more easily monitor through the online display.
