The Florida League of Cities is proud to share that two of Florida’s municipal leaders – FLC President Holly D. Smith, Vice Mayor of Sanibel, and Past FLC President Michael C. Blake, Mayor of Cocoa – have been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors.
Their appointments ensure Florida’s cities continue to have a strong voice in shaping national municipal policy, advocacy, and support for local decision-making.
As FLC President, Vice Mayor Smith has focused her tenure on “Building Bridges” – strengthening connections between cities, residents, and resources. A key part of that work has been helping cities bridge gaps through grant opportunities, expanding access to tools and support that enable communities to fund local priorities and enhance their quality of life.
Mayor Blake, who served as FLC President in 2023–2024, has been a champion for promoting municipal job opportunities and uplifting public service careers, helping cities recruit and retain the next generation of local government leaders. His leadership has emphasized the importance of strong, talented city teams in delivering essential services and advancing community goals.
Together, President Smith and Past President Blake bring deep experience, a passion for service, and Florida’s municipal perspective to the NLC Board of Directors. The League congratulates them on this well-deserved recognition and their ongoing service to Florida’s cities.
Additionally, Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons was appointed as Chair of the Federal Advocacy Committee for Transportation and Infrastructure Services, and Sunrise Deputy Mayor Jacquline A. Guzman was appointed to the Women in Municipal Government Constituency Group. Click here to read the NLC Press Release.
