The City of Pensacola recently launched its Employee Bikeshare Program as part of National Bike to Work Day.

The City invited the public to celebrate with a short bicycle ride around downtown. Participants met at City Hall for the ride.

Through the Employee Bikeshare Program, six bicycles are available to City employees to check out for professional and personal purposes during business hours. The benefits of a bikeshare program include:

  • Mobility for employees – Providing transportation options that help employees conduct their duties and responsibilities in an efficient, environmentally-friendly manner
  • Reduced motor vehicle traffic – Reducing the number of motor vehicles in areas with complicated infrastructure or a high number of pedestrians
  • Health through increased physical activity – Providing methods for employees to add more movement into their routine
  • Environmental benefits of reduced motor vehicle traffic – Using a bike helps reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

The City is adding this third pillar to its wellness program, which includes a physician engagement incentive and an annual health fair. This program is funded by health plan Florida Blue’s wellness program.
