City of St. Petersburg leadership worked quickly to organize weekend camps to help families impacted by Hurricane Idalia.
Shore Acres Recreation Center, in the heart of the Shore Acres neighborhood – a major flood-impacted zone – offered two weekend camps in September at no cost to city residents. Youth in kindergarten through eighth grade were welcome; however, residents were informed that space was limited. The camps ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents were instructed to register their children in person at the center and send a non-refrigerated lunch.
“Storm cleanup is a difficult and stressful time,” said Mayor Kenneth T. Welch. “For parents cleaning up their homes and figuring out next steps, maintaining some kind of normalcy for their children can be a challenge. I’d like to thank our Parks and Recreation team for going the extra mile to coordinate these post-storm weekend camps that can alleviate some of our families’ burdens.”
