Kevin Weiss, the Public Information Officer for the City of Zephyrhills, was reading the weekly newsletter from the Florida League of Cities (FLC) and saw a notice about FLCityJobs, a new job portal. Weiss viewed the video explaining the program (see above). When he realized it was simple and straightforward, Weiss forwarded the information to his HR Coordinator and City Manager. The HR Coordinator posted 12 open positions. By the next week, the posts had 70 views, and the City had four applications.

The HR team members commented on how easy it is to use the program, which is a one-stop destination for city recruitment. They took existing jobs from their website and uploaded them to FLCityJobs. “It doesn’t take a lot of time,” Weiss said. “It’s worth the small effort to do that.”

Like many cities, Zephyrhills has found it challenging to fill utility positions, including wastewater, and positions that have been held for a long time by people who are retiring. “We’re looking for people with experience with local government who want to move to a new opportunity,” Weiss said. Using FLCityJobs is a “no-brainer,” he said.

That thought is echoed by Areliz Chavez, Human Resources Assistant at the City of Avon Park. Immediately after posting jobs on FLCityJobs, Chavez started seeing applicants clicking on the City’s job links. FLCityJobs “is an excellent platform to explore job competition and promote opportunities,” she said. “It’s always important to advertise anywhere possible,” she said. “At the end of the day, you need only one good candidate.”

FLCityJobs is a robust job portal designed to support cities’ recruitment efforts by connecting them with top talent quickly and efficiently. Developed in response to the hiring challenges that cities are facing, FLCityJobs is a member resource that simplifies the process of finding the dedicated employees that communities need to thrive.

“It’s designed to help our cities attract top talent,” said FLC President Michael C. Blake, Mayor of the City of Cocoa. “Public works, public safety, administration – every corner of our cities depends on skilled, passionate individuals. Yet, as many of our officials know, the competition for hiring qualified candidates is challenging.”

This online platform replaces the League’s existing portal and offers several key enhancements to streamline a city’s recruitment process, including:

  • Self-administration: Cities can independently post and manage job listings, following approval by FLC staff.
  • Turnkey import system: Hiring managers can save time by automatically importing key details from an external link.
  • Data-driven insights: Cities can track where applicants are coming from and refine their recruitment strategies with built-in analytics.
  • Advanced searchability for job seekers: Candidates can easily filter job postings by type, location, salary or relevant keywords to quickly find opportunities that align with their skills.

FLCityJobs is more than just a job board; it’s a strategic tool designed to bolster recruitment efforts, help cities compete with the private sector and ensure that cities continue to attract qualified individuals eager to contribute to their communities.

The FLC will use targeted marketing and digital advertising to ensure this recruitment portal reaches prospective candidates in Florida and beyond.

Weiss said, “By using as many opportunities that you can to promote and leverage your job opportunities, it makes all the sense in the world.”
