The Town of Hillsboro Beach plans to strengthen its beach with 3,600 truckloads of sand from Clewiston, according to a recent article from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Severe weather contributed to the erosion, according to Hillsboro Beach Town Manager William “Mac” Serda, who was interviewed for the article. About 20% of the beach eroded in 2023. A sandbar that provides vital protection to the shore and residents was also affected.

The beach is central to the Town’s identity, said Mayor Dawn Miller. Miller referred to the beach as “the most important asset, unifying quality in the town.”

The sand will be selected to match the size and color of the grains that are already on the beach. The project will take about four to six weeks, most likely beginning in late January or February. Up to 200 trucks will place sand on the beach each day.

The cost is estimated to be almost $5 million. A federal grant will cover most of the cost.
