The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is reminding coastal cities and municipalities about its Sandcastles for Sloan national beach safety campaign. The campaign was created in honor of seven-year-old Sloan Mattingly, who sadly passed away in 2024 after a sand hole she was playing in collapsed. The campaign was developed in collaboration with the Mattingly family with the goal of raising awareness of beach safety so that everyone may enjoy their time at the beach.
“As a community, we stand with the Mattingly family in their desire to turn their unimaginable loss into a message of hope and prevention,” said Mayor Edmund Malkoon. “The Sandcastles for Sloan campaign serves as a reminder to prioritize sand safety while enjoying a day at the beach, and to share these lessons with others.”
The Sandcastles for Sloan campaign is centered around the message “Don’t dig holes – build sandcastles instead,” and includes sand safety tips, turning awareness into action to prevent future tragedies. The campaign materials were thoughtfully designed to reflect Sloan’s favorite things, like dogs and the color red.
The downloadable campaign materials include a flyer, rack card, video, tri-fold brochure, A-frame design, beach signage, promotional product mockups, and social media posts. All of the materials are available as PDF and InDesign files.
“This campaign was born out of the family’s wish to create something positive to honor Sloan’s memory and prevent similar tragedies,” added Mayor Edmund Malkoon. “We urge all communities to join us in sharing this important message.”
The Town’s website landing page dedicated to the campaign provides resources for families, educators, and municipal leaders to help spread the message of beach safety. Visit https://bit.ly/SandcastlesForSloan to download the assets.
