Leesburg Electric has been recognized among Florida’s top public power utilities, earning a 2025 Safety Award from the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA). The honor was presented at the Florida Lineman Competition Awards Banquet in Tallahassee and highlights the utility’s strong commitment to employee safety.
Linework is one of the most dangerous professions in the country, with a fatality rate far higher than the national average. From routine maintenance to storm response, electric crews face daily risks that require strict safety practices and ongoing training.
FMEA’s annual Safety Awards recognize utilities with the lowest incident rates, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Utilities are grouped by size to ensure fair comparisons.
Leesburg Electric earned a Perfect Record Award in its category for maintaining an incident-free record during the evaluation period. The recognition reflects a strong culture of accountability and a consistent focus on safe operations.
“Safety is the foundation of reliable electric utility operations and the cornerstone of employee protection,” said Amy Zubaly, FMEA Executive Director. “Every task, from routine maintenance to emergency power restoration, must be performed with a commitment to hazard awareness, proper procedures and accountability. Each of these winners, including Leesburg Electric, exemplifies this commitment, and we commend them for a job well done.”
Florida’s public power utilities are locally owned and operated, allowing them to respond quickly to community needs. Their emphasis on safety and training supports both reliable service and workforce protection.
FMEA represents 33 public power communities serving approximately four million customers across the state.
