The City of Ocoee has officially been proclaimed a “Purple Heart City,” a designation that honors the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel, veterans, and the families of those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Mayor Rusty Johnson issued the proclamation during the October 7 City Commission meeting at City Hall. The recognition reflects Ocoee’s deep appreciation for the men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while defending the United States. As part of the initiative, the city announced plans to install “Purple Heart City” signs along several roadways.

The Purple Heart, first established in 1782 by General George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit, is the oldest military decoration still awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. It is presented to those who have been wounded or lost their lives in action against a declared enemy of the nation.

Ocoee’s designation as a Purple Heart City was made in cooperation with the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 400. The organization works to foster goodwill among combat-wounded veterans and their families, promote patriotism, and support legislation that benefits those who have served.

Through this proclamation, the City of Ocoee joined communities across the country in publicly recognizing and honoring the courage and sacrifice of America’s Purple Heart recipients.
