Residents and visitors in Coral Gables have a new reason to look up.
The City of Coral Gables recently unveiled “Cielo Tejido,” a handwoven canopy installation now on display at Giralda Plaza in the heart of downtown. The installation, whose name translates to “woven sky,” creates a vibrant mosaic of color and pattern above the plaza, transforming the popular gathering space into an immersive cultural experience.
The installation officially debuted with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, drawing residents, visitors, and pedestrians eager to see the canopy firsthand. Suspended above Giralda Plaza, the woven artwork casts colorful patterns across the plaza below, adding a new visual element to one of Coral Gables’ busiest dining and shopping destinations.
Crafted by artisans from Etzatlán, Mexico, and presented in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Miami, “Cielo Tejido” blends traditional weaving techniques with a contemporary public art setting. The installation reflects Coral Gables’ ongoing commitment to celebrating global cultures and incorporating diverse traditions into public spaces.
“Cielo Tejido brings new energy to Giralda Plaza and creates more opportunities for residents and visitors to spend time in downtown,” said Economic Development Director Belkys Perez. “By pairing cultural installations with ongoing programming and outdoor experiences, we’re creating an environment where people want to spend time and support our local businesses.”
The installation is the first part of a two-part rotating art series at Giralda Plaza. “Cielo Tejido” will remain on display through July as part of the Giralda Sky Series. A second installation, “Giralda in Bloom: A Floral Canopy,” is scheduled to debut in August and will feature hundreds of floral-patterned umbrellas suspended overhead.
City officials are encouraging residents and visitors to stop by Giralda Plaza to experience the installation and explore the surrounding restaurants, shops, and downtown destinations.
Through projects like “Cielo Tejido,” Coral Gables is using public art to create memorable experiences, support local businesses, and invite people to engage with the city’s downtown spaces in new ways.
