For 20 years, a small but dedicated group of writers and poetry lovers gathered each month at the Largo Public Library to share original work, explore the writings of influential poets, and celebrate the power of the written word. This spring, the City of Largo marked a milestone anniversary for one of its longest-running and most unique community programs: Poets Live!

Founded in 2006 by local poet Wayne S. Williams, Poets Live! began just one year after the library’s current facility opened to the public. Over the years, it has evolved into the library’s longest-running adult program, offering a welcoming and creative outlet for residents from across the community.

The program’s 20th anniversary celebration took place April 13 at the library, where participants and city leaders gathered to honor the legacy of the program and the man behind it. During the event, Assistant Library Director Geri Remming presented Williams with a commemorative award recognizing his contributions to the City of Largo and the local arts community.

Williams, who was born in Ohio and moved to Florida in 1966, joined the City of Largo in 2004 as part of the city’s Communications and Engagement team. He served the community for 15 years before retiring, while also helping build Poets Live! into a meaningful gathering place for aspiring and experienced writers alike. In 2012, Williams published The Trunk, a collection of poetry inspired by his early life experiences, and in 2016 he was named the City of Largo’s inaugural Poet Laureate.

What has helped the program endure is its simple but powerful format. Each month, participants are invited to read original poetry and take part in discussions centered around the work and life of a featured poet. The program encourages both creative expression and lifelong learning, while fostering personal connections among attendees.

The anniversary also highlights the evolving role public libraries continue to play in community life. Beyond books and research materials, libraries increasingly serve as gathering spaces for arts, culture, education, and civic engagement. At Largo Public Library, programs like Poets Live! demonstrate how local governments can create opportunities for residents to connect through shared interests and creative pursuits.

Opened in 2005, Largo Public Library serves a community of more than 75,000 residents and has earned recognition for its innovative programming and public services. The continued success of Poets Live! reflects that same spirit of innovation and community-building.

Two decades after its founding, the program remains a meaningful part of Largo’s cultural landscape — proof that poetry, storytelling, and human connection still resonate across generations.
